The fact that there are systematic differences between the ways in which people speak, write, and gesture in different parts of the world has led to a great number of concepts and terms having been proposed to capture this variation. Here is a nonexhaustive list: language, dialect, sociolect, register, sublanguage, activity language, restricted language, trade language, scientific language, text type, accent, “patois,” jargon, slang.
