Geoffrey Neil Leech was born in Gloucester, in the west of England on 16 January 1936. After attending Tewkesbury Grammar School, he studied at University College London (BA honors in English Language and Literature, 1959; MA in Linguistics, 1963), where he also took up his first academic teaching position as an assistant lecturer—later lecturer— in 1962. His first monograph, English in Advertising: A Linguistic Study of Advertising in Great Britain (Leech, 1966), grew out of his MA thesis, which was submitted in 1963.
