Although opinions diverge as to whether or not there is a Nigerian English, it is generally agreed that it is possible to do a broad characterization of varieties of English in Nigeria. Jibril (1982), Awonusi (1986, 1988), Jowitt (1991), Bamiro (1994), Igboanusi (2002), and others have demonstrated also that Nigerian English is variable and that its variability is socially motivated.
