The notion of teachers being active participants in research has a relatively long history in the field of general education. However, it is only since the late 1980s that it has received increasing attention and acceptance in the field of English language teaching. In this entry I discuss what is meant by teacher research and consider qualitative approaches typically used in teacher research. In particular I focus on action research, an approach to undertaking research which has gained ground in language teacher education.
