The concept of a ‘delta’ and some of the major terminological problems associated with recent progress in delta research are discussed. The existing and newly suggested classifications of alluvial deltas are reviewed, with emphasis on their advantages and weaknesses. It is suggested that several classification schemes can be used in delta research, but in a hierarchical way — with a descriptive and relatively detailed classification on the basic level of field studies.
