Summary

The Queen Charlotte Basin is a Tertiary strike-slip basin located adjacent to a 500-km-long transform segment of the Pacific–North America plate boundary, offshore Canada. The basin contains Eocene to Pliocene deposits in a number of sub-basins in excess of 3000 m deep, oriented either parallel or at moderately oblique angles to the plate margin. The basin-fill consists of syn-extension volcanics and clastics in grabens and half-grabens, overlain by a regional blanket of post-extension clastics. Clastic depositional settings include a range of non-marine and marine environments. Pliocene compression and uplift resulted in local inversion, deformation and erosion of parts of the basin fill. The basin's evolution is interpreted in terms of a tectonic cycle of transtension, passive subsidence, and transpression, a typical development history for strike-slip basins.
