To remain competitive, most firms must develop global supply chains for sourcing, marketing, or both. This article discusses the rationale for developing global supply chains. Following the review, the article describes the challenges in global supply chain development and the stages that firms evolve through. The final section of the article describes the major differences between domestic and global supply chains and the management changes that need to be made.
