Summary

This chapter describes the principles and the current practice of transfusion of blood components and the use of hematopoietic growth factors, erythropoietin, granulocyte- and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factors, and thrombopoietin in leukemia. The chapter includes a brief description of methods to prepare blood components in the US and in Europe, a review of infectious and non-infectious side effects of blood transfusion, and a discussion of policies to overcome refractoriness not infrequently shown by leukemic patients to random donor platelet transfusion.
