Summary

Osteoporosis is an important orthopaedic concern, as the clinical consequence of osteoporosis is fracture. In this chapter, key osteoporosis issues in orthopaedic medicine will be discussed in an evidence-based manner. Issues addressed will include: (a) the identification of osteoporosis in patients with fractures (b) treatment guidelines for fracture patients with osteoporosis (c) effective pharmacologic therapies for reducing fracture risk (d) bisphosphonate therapy and fracture healing and (e) adverse effects associated with pharmacologic therapies for osteoporosis.
