Abstract

Armed conflict has been, and continues to be, a major problem around the world. In 2009 there were 36 ongoing armed conflicts; this is lower than in the 1990s but 24 percent higher than in the early 2000s (Harbom & Wallensteen 2010), suggesting no consistent upward or downward trend in conflict. Furthermore, there is no apparent regional trend in the outbreak of armed conflicts; in just the past 30 years, every region of the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, has experienced intense armed conflict. One serious consequence of armed conflict is migration, a phenomenon that scholars are still seeking to understand.
