Abstract

In 2010 Bangladesh was the sixth among the top 10 emigration countries and seventh among the top 10 remittance receiving countries in the world (World Bank 2011). Bangladesh is mainly an emigration country, from where both long-term migration, mainly to the industrialized countries in the West and Southeast Asia, and short-term, contract-based labor migration, mostly to Middle Eastern countries, have been taking place (Siddiqui 2003). In addition, substantial migration to neighboring India also took place during the post-independence period of the early 1970s which has spurred much illegal migration from the country in later years.
