In his book entitled Mingling of American and Canadian peoples, migration scholar Marcus Lee Hansen charts population movements across the Canada–US border since the 17th century. Over two and a half million Canadians are estimated to have moved and settled in the United States from 1840 to 1930 (Lavoie 1973). The extent of this human movement led Hansen to depict the phenomenon as one that constituted “the largest single reciprocity in international migration history” (Hansen 1940: v).
