Large-scale migration to cities and urban areas since the 1980s has been a major symptom of China's reforms and growth. These migrants have been portrayed variously as protagonists of Chinese reform and as its victims. Former peasants who sought urban opportunities have been pioneers of economic and social reform, while migrant laborers and petty merchants have also been among the most vulnerable to exploitation by capitalists, state agents, and wealthier residents.
