Abstract

Does fair trade reduce migration? Yes, but the answer is nuanced. Farmers who are able to sell their produce under fair trade terms are much less likely to leave their farms for urban destinations within their own country. But participation in fair trade and international migration are very compatible strategies because migration is an important way to diversify economic risk. Whether or not farmers or their family members migrate is more influenced by their community's history of migration (or nonmigration) than by fair trade.
