Abstract

Ireland as a place is fundamentally shaped by the process and experience of migration. The long history of migration from Ireland, which intensified from the mid-1800s onward, receives most academic and popular attention. However, there is also a long, though less visible, history of migration to Ireland. The effects of these different movements of people are present in an ongoing debate about Irish identity and its changing relationship to migration.
