Abstract

Beginning with the post–World War II era, there have been two main policy approaches to economic development within Latin America, one with an import substitution industrialization (ISI) focus, and the other with a structurally adjusted, export-driven open economy focus. These two strategies have had differing and sometimes contrasting impacts on, inter alia, human migration patterns and the agricultural sector in Latin America. This essay examines the interface between human migration and the transformation of agriculture in the context of the respective economic development strategies.
