The Oxford English Dictionary defines “merchant” as one who buys and sells commodities for a profit, especially overseas traders dealing with foreign countries, and “community” as “a body of people organized into a political, municipal or social unity.” This essay aims to explore the sort of migrant communities merchants formed when they ventured overseas.
