Abstract

Migration is a constant in human history and has a remarkable capacity for social transformation. Population mobility and migration were an essential component of the Neolithic revolution and the large-scale population displacements that helped construct the great classical empires. In the modern era, population movement is a vital component of urbanization and the industrial revolution. In addition, forced displacement of people during during World War II was a major feature of 20th-century European history and dislocation in the global South. In sum, international migrations are nothing new in global history.
