Most people travel every day: to school, to work, for leisure, or for a multitude of other reasons. The ability to travel freely on a daily basis is usually taken for granted, and is essential to allow modern economies and societies to function. When the ability to travel is restricted (for instance, due to extreme weather, natural disasters, or war) then many aspects of everyday life also cease. While everyday mobility is clearly important, it may not be immediately apparent why it is also relevant to a volume on migration, which is concerned mainly with changes of residence often over very long distances.
