Abstract

The relationship between development and public health is crucially intertwined with the conditions of migration and its effects on sender and receiver communities. There is a powerful association between public health and development (Shaffer et al. 2005; Waitzkin et al. 2005). The association between public health and development is complicated by their interaction with the dynamics of migration. Migration and development are inextricably linked (van Naerssen et al. 2008). In addition, migration has direct effects on public health conditions (Carballo & Mourtala 2005). This essay will conclude with a discussion of current trends in migration and development, and their implications for public health and governance in a globalized world.
