Abstract

Empirical evidence has revealed that remittances to countries suffering from economic recessions often grow during and after these events. Remittances act as a cushion against these shocks since transfers often soar after disasters, for example Hurricane Mitch in Honduras and Nicaragua, and after earthquakes in Central America and Peru (International Organization of Migration 2004).
