Abstract

Although for a long time it was believed that pre-contemporary societies were largely sedentary, closed, and stable, historiography has recently recognized the continuity of the phenomenon of migration between antiquity and the early modern times. For the history of the Roman empire, this new approach has constituted a sort of “migratory turn.”
