Abstract

Indo-European is, by speaker population, by far the world's greatest language family. This chapter looks especially at the “Steppe” and “Anatolian” hypotheses for Indo-European origins and dispersals, and adds to the discussion begun in chapter 11 about how language families spread in prehistoric times. It also discusses the vexed question of linguistic chronology.
