Abstract

The Caribbean islands received colonizing populations on many occasions after 5000 bce, and especially at about 500 bce, but contacts with adjacent mainland regions always continued. The main linguistic element present at Spanish contact was Arawak-speaking, related to Amazonian Arawak populations.
