It has not been conventional in philosophical overviews of ethics to include Native American concepts. A century ago, the famous Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics (Hastings 1913–27) contained much about the religious ideas and practices of the “Amerinds” (I: 379), including tribes such as the Navajo (IX: 254–6), but little about American Indian ethics. Even in the recent Encyclopedia of Ethics (Becker and Becker 2001), American Indian ethical ideas are absent from discussion.
