What is engineering? No doubt it is easier to present examples that involve engineering of one sort or another than it is to define what engineering is. (A version of “I know it when I see it.”) The same is true of ethics, and the combination, engineering ethics. To illustrate some of the difficulties, consider a definition of engineering attributed to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET):

  • ethics;
  • practical (applied) ethics;
  • conflict of interest;
  • duty and obligation;
  • engineering;
  • environmental regulation;
  • intellectual property;
  • judgment;
  • knowledge;
  • legislation and regulations
