Same-sex marriage, like heterosexual marriage, can be understood at a variety of levels: as a personal commitment between partners, as the social acknowledgment of that commitment, as a formal legal status, as a religious sacrament, and so on. While the different levels are related, they may vary independently: for instance, it is possible for a marriage to be recognized by a state but not a church, or vice versa.
