The phrase “identity politics” refers to a type of political movement where the issue of social identity is a central concern of the political movement itself. The phrase emerged in the early 1970s, in particular with reference to the kind of political turn taken in the late 1960s and early 1970s by many of those fighting on behalf of African Americans and women in the United States.
