Summary

Diabetes has been known since ancient times but its link to the pancreas was made in the late 19th century. Insulin was the first hormone to be isolated and used for treatment (in 1921) and the first to be produced by genetic engineering (in 1980). Tablet medication has been available for over 50 years and the last 20 years have witnessed the advent of many new drugs to treat type 2 diabetes.
