Summary
Over the past 40 years, orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) has evolved from an experimental surgical procedure with a low likelihood of success to a universally accepted treatment of both acute liver failure and end-stage liver disease. The 1-year post-transplant survival rate is usually >85% and therefore most liver transplant recipients expect to achieve long-term survival in conjunction with a significantly improved quality of life.
For younger patients who have undergone successful OLT, the expectation today is to be able to have a near-normal life including the ability to have children, and enjoyment of normal sexual relations. This chapter discusses the issues pertaining to sexual health and function, contraception, and pregnancy in the OLT recipient.
