Summary

Polyhedral silsesquioxanes Rn(SiO1.5)n with n = 6, 8, 10, 12 and R = CH3, C2H5, n-C3H7, n-C4H9, i-C4H9, n-C5H11, n-C6H13, n-C7H15, n-C5H17, n-C9H19, n-C10H21, C6H5, C1–C3H6, Br-C3H6, I-C3H6, NCS-C3H6, C6F5-C3H6 and MesSiO can be synthesized by hydrolysis of RSiCl3 or RSi(OMe)3, modification of existing silsesquioxanes or cage rearrangement of octasilsesquioxanes to the greater deca- and dodecasilsesquioxanes. Some of the mixtures of silsesquioxanes produced by cage rearrangements can be separated by NP-HPLC, SEC (size exclusion chromatography) and LAC (liquid affinity chromatography). These mixtures can also be analyzed by MALDI-TOF-MS using a special matrix.
