Synthesis of complex target structures is likely more efficient when the use of protecting groups can be reduced or avoided. This can be attained by following biogenetic precedent, by enlisting functional group-tolerant skeleton-forming reactions, and – most important – by changing the sequence in which functional groups are introduced.
