Summary

Organocatalysts with structures that display an element of planar chirality are presented. Nomenclature elements concerning these planar-chiral compounds are introduced with a discussion on the particular opportunities for facial discrimination brought about by these structures in the context of catalysis. The field is then covered in a comprehensive manner: in the first part, Lewis bases are presented according to the nature of the active center. The second part deals with Lewis acids and other catalysts relying on H-bonding. Finally, catalytic oxidative and reductive processes are discussed.
