A Pivotal Point: On the Edge of History

  • Peter Buchanan

Architecture critic Peter Buchanan places the current impoverishment of the built environment squarely at the feet of modernity – the modernising impulse that has characterised the last half millennium. Where, however, does this leave globalism, as a culmination of the commercial drive of the modern era, with its roots in voracious colonialism? The relevant choice is not between local tradition and global modernity. Rather, today's pressing need is for an architecture that supports a sustainable planetary culture yet to come, which transcends and supersedes modernity.
