Abstract

Membrane structures are becoming increasingly popular in architectural design. This is exemplified by mechanically pretensioned systems, such as Foster + Partner's roof for Dresden Station and even by large-scale art installations, such as Anish Kapoor's Tarantantara or MARSYAS; and also by pneumatically pretensioned systems, such as Herzog & de Meuron's Allianz Arena in Munich or PTW's Watercube in Beijing. But how might membrane systems and their performative potential be developed further? Here, Michael Hensel and Achim Menges discuss the findings of a series of membrane-research studios that they conducted at the Architectural Association in London and the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design.
