A thermodynamic database of the Al-rich side of the Al–Fe–Mg–Si system was derived and it was used to calculate phase transitions and solidification behavior of a commercial A356 alloy. The predicted phase transitions were examined by DTA experiments and micrograph investigations using SEM/EDX/EBSD. The experimental results are in a good agreement with the calculated Scheil-solidification behavior.
