Silicon nanocrystals with high photoluminescence quantum yields can be produced through nonthermal plasma synthesis when both the synthesis and the post-synthesis environment are carefully optimized. In their article on page 4042, Uwe Kortshagen and co-workers demonstrate that the injection of hydrogen into the postsynthesis region is crucial for terminating surface defects of plasmaproduced silicon nanocrystals and for achieving optimal luminescent properties.
