Shape control of new FexO–Fe3O4and Fe1–yMnyO–Fe3–zMnzO4 nanostructures (pages 1661–1667)

New shapes of FexO-Fe3O4 (wüstite-magnetite) and Fe1-yMnyO-Fe3-zMnzO4 nanoparticles were obtained by decomposition of the corresponding metal carboxylates in an amine/carboxylic acid surfactant system. (see figure) The nanoparticles' shape was controlled by varying reaction parameters. The nanoparticles exhibit internal nanostructures which support a growth mechanism on which negatively curved rough crystal faces are etched away. These nanoparticles were successfully oxidized to the corresponding magnetic oxides without losing their original shape.
