    • is professor of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Bayreuth. He studied chemistry at the University of Mainz, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1974. After two postdoctoral years at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, USA, he started a university career in Freiburg. In 1984 he became aprofessor of Macromolecular Chemistry at the University of Karlsruhe, and in 1986 he moved to Bayreuth. His research activities cover polymer synthesis, photoreactions in polymers.

    • is Professor of Physics at the University of Bayreuth. A physicist by training, he received his Ph.D. in 1969 from the University of Stuttgart. With short interruptions he then worked until 1980 at the IBM research laboratory in San Jose, California, which he left as manager of the Organic Solids Department taking up his current position. His research activities include laser spectroscopy and laser chemistry. He is an Editorial Advisor for Advanced Materials.


The crucial role that polymers play in the electronics industry is just one example of how modern life has been influenced by these multi purpose materials. Development of novel polymers with new and exciting properties and their effective application requires an interdisciplinary effort. This has guided the structuring of the research effort in West Germany. One result of this has been the founding of an Institute for Materials Science in Bayreuth.
