Solar induced hydrogen production in a semiconductor septum electrochemical photovoltaic cell

Seawater + visible light → electricity and hydrogen. This is the reaction which occurs in a solar cell recently developed by a group at the Michigan State University, based on an n-type polycrystalline cadmium selenide (CdSe) electrode (see figure). The work is based on experience gained in research into membranes for artificial photosynthesis.
