    • Dr. Helmut Thomann studied chemistry and mineralogy at the Technical University of Munich, where he received his Ph.D. in 1961. He was project leader on piezoelectric ceramics in Siemens & Halske research laboratories. Later on his research activities included ceramic capacitors, thermistors, nonlinear resistors and other ferroelectric or semiconducting ceramic materials. He is now head of the department on Applied Materials Research in Siemens Corporate Research and Development in Munich and Erlangen.


Abstract

Surface acoustic wave filters and delay lines are two application in electronics of piezoelectric ceramics such as LiNbO3 LiTaO3 and BaTiO3, materials which convert a mechanical stimulus into an electrical signal. The basic physics and crystal chemistry of the materials, including ferroelectric ceramics, are described and an outline for further development given.
