    • He received his Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Frankfurt in 1968. After a two-year postdoctoral stay at Florida State University, he returned to Germany and joined the staff of the Max Planck Institute, Department of Molecular Physics at Heidelberg. In 1975 he moved to the Chemistry Department of the University at Mainz, where he became a Professor in 1978. After Professorships at the Universities of Münster (1981-82) and Bayreuth (1983-84) he was appointed as a director of the newly founded Max Planck Institute, for Polymer Research in Mainz. His main research interests concern the structure and dynamics of synthetic polymers and liquid-crystalline systems by advanced NMR techniques.

Coordination of the activities of Europe's polymer scientists is one of the major aims of the European Polymer Federation (EPF). Two-year presidencies are served by representatives of the various national organizations (currently Germany and from next year Switzerland), workshops and symposia being organized aimed at encouraging the international transfer of reserach expertise. The President of the EPF outlines its activities.
