    • was born in Hyogo prefecture (Japan) in 1935. He received a doctorate in physical chemistry from Kyoto University in 1970. In 1961 he joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Electrical Communication Laboratories, where his main activities have been in the field of compound semiconductor materials and optical semiconductor devices for fiber communication systems. Since 1989 he has been a Research Fellow of the Fujimoto Research Laboratory at the NTT Opto-Electronics Laboratories. He has published over 50 scientific papers.


Abstract

This special issue of Advanced Materials concentrates on the research and development activities of the Japanese telecommunications and electronics company Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT). The work described briefly here, ranging from MBE and MOCVD through computer-aided materials design to optical fibers, liquid crystals and high-Tc superconductors, is presented in more detail in the following articles.
