    • Ralf Riedel studied chemistry at the University of Stuttgart, receiving his Ph.D. in 1986 for work on the synthesis of organophosphorus compounds, from white phosphorus in the group of Prof. E. Fluck. after post-doctoral work with Prof. G. Petzow and Prof R. J. Brook at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart, he moved back in 1990 to the University of Stuttgart in the group of Prof. G. Becker. In 1992 he was awarded his Habilitation in Inorganic Chemistry. His research activities are focused on the formation of ceramic materials from inorganic precursors. The synthesis and the characterization of new materials with unique properties as well as the preparation of ceramic bulk materials, coatings, fibers, membranes and powders are the main topics of his current investigations.

Abstract

Superhard materials are needed to replace diamond in applications at high temperatures, where diamond is unstable. Novel carbon- and boron-based materials are described whose discovery or postulation has greatly stimulated research in this area. The use of calculations to predict the properties of new materials is illustrated for B-C3N4, which was synthesized only after its structure (see Figure) had been calculated.
