High buckling stability in single-walled carbon nanotube polymer composites is demonstrated. A significant increase (29–51%) in the critical buckling load is observed upon addition of a relatively small weight fraction (1–2%) of oxidized nanotubes into a polycarbonate matrix (see Figure). Such nanotube-reinforced polymer composites could provide significant enhancements in buckling stability, an important consideration in the design of ultra-lightweight structural elements for aeronautical and space applications.
