The traditional compromise between stability and efficiency in top-emitting organic light-emitting devices has been resolved by using periodically corrugated metallic cathodes. J. Feng, H.-B. Sun, and co-workers demonstrate on page 1187 how this new design causes cross-coupling of the surface plasmon polaritons and the microcavity modes. This design removes the requirement for the cathode material to be vanishingly thin, allowing thicker cathode layers, which leads to higher efficiencies and longer device lifetimes.
