ZnO network templates are converted into aerographite, a novel carbon-based material, by R. Adelung and co-workers on page 3486. While parts of the ZnO crystals are missing and etched, on the outside carbon tubes have already been formed. Aerographite tubes are like an inflated version of multiwalled carbon nanotubes, with increased microscopic diameter but unchanged nanoscopic wall thickness. These tubes are interconnected to form a superlow-density material with a volume of several cubic centimeters and remarkable mechanical, electrical, and optical properties.
