Large, Crack-Free Freestanding Films with Chiral Nematic Structures

A straightforward and inexpensive method to eliminate cracking in mesoporous thin films with chiral nematic structures is demonstrated to prepare large films of silica and carbon templated by nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC). The addition of polyols such as glucose to a dispersion of NCC and sol–gel precursors eliminates cracking without affecting the resulting optical properties.
