Black molybdenum oxide (BMO) is prepared by annealing transparent MoO3. While recent efforts on other black oxides show that their black colour contributes little towards visible light harvesting, the presented BMO shows much-enhanced photoresponse over the UV–vis–IR regions. By sandwiching the BMO with suitable charge transporting layers, a photodetector with spectral response from UV to IR is demonstrated.
