A highly efficient nonlinear optical response, in terms of both low threshold intensity and high stability, is achieved in polymer-stabilized liquid crystals doped with a small amount of oligothiophene. A. Shishido and co-workers demonstrate on page 787 that polymer stabilization decreases the threshold intensity by a factor of 6, and a large refractive index change of 0.14 is stably maintained up to >110 W cm2.
